While, we find out, about things, in a much more timely way, unfortunately, many people end up relying on someone else’s opinion, attitude, political/personal agenda and/or purposefully false (or distorted/biased) reports , instead of making it our personal responsibility, to exhaustively consider and attempt to accurately assess news, determine and differentiate between real facts, as opposed to someone else’s opinion, etc! With that in mind, this article will briefly attempt to consider, examine, review, and discuss 4 considerations for becoming a better-informed citizen.

1. Is it a “black and white” problem?: What may seem obvious to some seems much less obvious to someone else! Doesn’t it make sense to examine, what are the choices as well as the real facts? Is this a yes or no situation, one way or the other, or are the options in between? Why does it seem that everything ends up being a partisan issue, when we could benefit, if there were more effort, to achieve a true meeting of minds, for the greater good? What are the potential ramifications of specific actions and/or deferring them?

2. Opinion/interpretation, versus, data: We often witness data being misinterpreted, misreported, misused, etc, whether on purpose or not! Those with specific political/party positions often pick and choose and selectively apply only part of the issues! If you want to evaluate any news, scrutinize real data rather than interpretations and/or opinions! If, in your opinion, you are not able to understand what the data means and represents, listen to current experts, etc., instead of these, trying to turn your opinions into facts!

3. Where is the evidence/documentation?: Avoid blindly accepting someone else’s opinion/interpretation, but instead carefully examine the specific documentation and evidence!

4. Listen with an open mind, both ways: Try to listen with an open mind, even if you initially disagree with your personal opinion! The better you are informed, the more you can learn what makes sense and what cannot!
